About Root & Branch
A bonsai site built by someone who went from zero to slightly obsessedβand wants to make sure the journey is actually enjoyable for you.
How This Started
Five years ago, I was working as a retail buyer for a garden center in Maui. It was a dream job in many waysβI spent my days around plants, talking to customers, learning what actually works in the real world. But there was something I kept noticing in the bonsai corner: people would get excited, pick up a gorgeous little tree, and then we’d never see them again.
Sometimes they’d come back, looking defeated. “It died,” they’d say. “I must not have a green thumb.” And that broke my heart, because the tree hadn’t failedβthe system had. They’d bought a Juniper with zero guidance. They’d watered it according to some half-remembered blog post. Nobody told them the truth: bonsai is learnable, but you need clear, honest information from someone who gets what it’s like to start from zero.
So I started researching. I read every book I could find. I talked to the master growers in Hawaii. I killed some trees myself (yes, even people who work with plants kill thingsβit’s okay). And I started writing down what I learned in a simple Google Doc, just to help customers at my store.
That document became a guide. The guide became a website. And now, Root & Branch is a community where thousands of people are learning bonsai the right wayβnot the intimidating way, not the perfectionist way, but the real, honest, actually-doable way.
That’s the question that drives everything we do. And I’m genuinely thrilled that you’re here.
Our Mission
We’re here to prove that bonsai is for everyoneβnot just collectors, not just people with sunlit apartments, not just people with infinite patience. Bonsai is for the person learning their first tree, the busy professional in a studio apartment, the person who wants to feel a little more connected to nature and craft.
Our job is to:
- Be honest about what bonsai actually requires (time, attention, some learning) without making it sound scary
- Provide clear guidance that doesn’t assume you know anything, and doesn’t gatekeep information
- Celebrate the small wins because starting is hard, and showing up every week is harder
- Build community so nobody feels alone in the mistakes, questions, and discoveries
- Keep it accessible β in cost, in tone, in the time it takes to understand something new
What You’ll Find Here
Root & Branch is organized around the real questions people actually ask when they’re getting started:
Beginner Guides
Step-by-step walkthroughs for everything from choosing your first tree to recognizing when something’s wrong. These are written assuming zero prior knowledge. No jargon. No showing off. Just honest, clear instruction.
Species Spotlights
Not all bonsai are created equal. We break down which species are beginner-friendly, which ones are trickier, and which one is right for your space and your level. Spoiler: there’s a right choice for you.
Tools & Gear
You don’t need expensive equipment to start. We recommend affordable, quality tools that beginners actually needβand explain why each one matters. Plus honest reviews of starter kits.
Real Stories
Blog posts and reader features about people learning bonsai in dorms, apartments, offices, and gardens. The kinds of people you probably are.
Community & Q&A
Our best asset isn’t the guidesβit’s the people. We have a thriving community where you can ask questions, share photos, celebrate wins, and learn from people who’ve been there.
Meet Your People
Root & Branch is for the 25-55 year-old person who saw a bonsai somewhere and thought, “Could I do that?” It’s for hobbyists building collections, apartment dwellers with one sunny window, gift-buyers looking for something that actually lasts, busy professionals who want to slow down for 10 minutes a day.
You might be learning your first tree. You might be refining technique on your fifth. You might have killed three bonsai and are trying again. You’re welcome here. This is your community.
And yes, we have some experienced growers and even a few obsessed collectors here too. But they’re not gatekeeping. They’re sharing. They’re remembering what it felt like to be scared to wire their first branch.
Why People Trust Root & Branch
Honest
We don’t hide behind mystique. If something’s hard, we say it’s hard. If it’s easy, we say that too. If you’re thinking about quitting, we’ll tell you whether to push through or try a different species.
Real Experience
Everything we teach has been tested in real apartments, real offices, real climates. Not in a controlled greenhouse. Not in theory. In the actual lives of actual people.
Community-Driven
Our best insights come from readers. When someone figures out how to grow bonsai in a dorm with a north-facing window, we share it. Questions from our community drive our guides.
No Gatekeeping
Bonsai doesn’t belong to the “experts.” It belongs to anyone willing to learn. We share everything we know because your success makes us proud.
